:: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE :: “Figure 8—A Tribute to the Music of Elliott Smith” at Valentine’s, August 6 Albany, NY – August 6, 2004 would have been renowned singer-songwriter Elliott Smith’s 35th birthday. To pay tribute to his memory and legacy, a number of Albany-area musicians will perform Smith’s music as part of “Figure 8,” taking place at Valentine’s Music Hall in Albany, NY, on Friday, August 6. Elliott Smith passed away on October 21, 2003. Up until the time of his death, Smith was widely considered one of the foremost songwriting talents of his generation. His five solo albums, including the 1998 breakthrough “XO” (DreamWorks), showcased a breadth of pop sensibility and deft musicianship (Smith often played all of the instruments on his records), and his music was prominently featured in the film “Good Will Hunting”, which earned him an Oscar nomination for the song “Miss Misery.” Smith’s final recordings have been collected and completed by his family and friends, and will be released on October 19 as “From a Basement on the Hill” through Anti/Epitaph records. A number of tributes have taken place throughout the country since that time, including one last November in Smith’s adopted hometown of Los Angeles that featured performances from such luminaries as Beck, Beth Orton and Lou Barlow (of Sebadoh). The Albany tribute will feature such local notables as John Brodeur (of the Suggestions), Brian Bassett, Ed Gorch (of knotworking), and Eric Halder, plus Albany expatriate Brett Rosenberg and regional performer Danny Brennan. More artists are expected to be added prior to the date of the show. All proceeds from the show will go directly to the Elliott Smith Memorial Fund. The following information on the memorial fund is taken from the www.sweetadeline.net: “The Elliott Smith Memorial Fund is a not-for-profit organization being established by Elliott's family for the sole purpose of providing financial support for children who are victims of abuse. Although it is still in the process of being organized, the Elliott Smith Memorial Fund will be registered as a not-for-profit entity pursuant to Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Elliott Smith Memorial Fund is the only organization authorized by Elliott's family to carry out his charitable wishes, and his family is not at this time associated with any other fund or foundation.” Interested parties can make donations by contacting the Elliott Smith Memorial Fund at 2658 Griffith Park Blvd. #138, Los Angeles, CA 90039.
